The good news? You just landed a new job. The bad news? You’re not loving it. If you just started in a new role and are already facing challenges, it can certainly be disheartening. But don’t jump ship. Instead, face these issues head on and turn the situation around with these tips.

Do This Before You Go

Talk to your boss.

Are you on information overload? Are you unclear about goals and expectations? Are you confused by certain tasks? Talk to your boss!

It’s their job to clarify areas where there is confusion and help you to get and stay on track. As a new employee, it’s completely normal to have challenges like these. But don’t wait too long to talk to your boss. Now’s the time to bring your concerns to their attention.

Find a mentor.

Is there someone you’ve noticed at work who seems to excel? Does the company offer a mentoring program? Do they have a buddy system for new hires?

Whether it’s a formal program, or simply someone you can informally meet and chat with about your challenges and successes, find a mentor. This is someone who can offer perspective and feedback, so you can succeed in your new role. They can also help you to understand the culture, so you become more integrated and comfortable within it, faster.

Identify weaknesses.

Are there any areas where you lack the right skill or knowledge to perform a task? Then let your boss know and ask for the resources to learn. Whether it’s an online class, shadowing a co-worker, or offering other training opportunities, it’s important to identify these issues early on and work with your manager to overcome them.

Embrace a growth mindset.

Do whatever you can to learn and grow in those first few days, weeks, and months on the job. Take advantage of all orientation and training opportunities. Don’t let questions go unanswered. Reach out to the right person or ask your boss if you’re not sure who that is, to get answers. Aim to learn, grow, and reach your potential in this new role.

Learn from mistakes.

If you do make a mistake, don’t stress. Look at any mistakes as learning opportunities. Find out what happened and ways to avoid it in the future.
