Using Your Network of Friends to Help You Get a Job
For most people, they keep their personal and professional lives separate. However, if you’re interested in finding a new job opportunity, can you tap into the power of friendships? Absolutely.
In today’s world, many jobs are filled through word of mouth and referrals. If you have friends who work in positions or for companies you’re interested in, then it’s certainly a good idea to reach out and ask around about new opportunities.
Summer’s the ideal season to get started since it’s also the time for cookouts, picnics, and parties. You’ll be seeing more people for the rest of summer and into Labor Day weekend and can let your friends and family know you’re searching for a new job.
Just make sure before you go, you bring several business cards with you. That way, if someone you meet has a job lead or you meet a new person, you can hand them out and follow up.
Another reason to ask a friend for a referral to a new job?
It carries more weight for a hiring manager than a resume submitted by a stranger. In fact, many hiring managers rely heavily on their employees for referrals. Some even reward them with bonuses or other perks through an employee referral program.
So how can you go about asking friends for referrals to new jobs without sounding awkward?
If it’s a good friend, just be direct. Let them know you’re looking for a new position and are wondering if their employer is hiring. If you saw an opening listed at their company for a job you’re interested in, ask them to send your resume to the hiring manager. Many people are happy to help.
If, however, they’re not comfortable referring you, don’t get upset. It’s not worth ruining a friendship over a job opportunity that might not have even worked out.
Also, if you interview, but don’t get the job, don’t vent or get angry with your friend. Instead, thank them for referring you and offer to do the same if you can help them out in the future.
