Happiness Series: Happy Workers are 13% More Productive
When it comes to your company, there’s a big focus on customer satisfaction. It’s important to keep them happy and engaged if you want your business to survive and thrive.
However, are you also equally focused on employee happiness? In other words, are you investing time and effort to ensure your people are satisfied working at your organization? If you’re not, you’re missing out on a valuable opportunity.
In fact, according to recent research by Oxford University’s Said Business School, there’s a link between happiness and productivity. The study found that those workers who were happy to be there were 13% more productive, making calls faster and converting more calls into sales.
What’s more, is that the study showed that more productive workers didn’t stay on the job longer or for additional hours when compared to their less productive counterparts. They were more efficient and effective within the same number of hours, leading to a boost in overall productivity.
So why exactly is this?
When it comes to happy employees, they’re more likely to care. They’re more vested in the company and its customers and are therefore more apt to go the extra mile in their work. On top of that, they’re more interested and aligned with the company’s organizational goals, taking them into account in their performance each day.
Happy employees are also less likely to make mistakes. When an employee is satisfied on the job, they’re more focused, present and on top of the duties. As a result, they’ll notice discrepancies faster and be able to correct course quicker if needed before a problem escalates into a significant issue.
Also, happy employees are more loyal to a company. They like their jobs and their employers and are therefore more apt to stick around. This leads to lower turnover rates and higher retention, costing a company less in the long run.
So how can you make your employees happier?
The single best way is to show your appreciation. In study after study, employees state that they want to be recognized and valued for their contributions. This can be as simple as a “thank you” in person or as a complex as formal rewards and recognition program. But employees who feel appreciated are generally happier and enjoy work more.
